The British Transport Police seek a new External Affairs Advisor to join the team!

The Opportunity

Ellwood Atfield is delighted to have partnered with the British Transport Police (BTP) to recruit for an External Affairs Advisor on a full-time, permanent basis. This role pays a salary of £36,529.65 (plus London allowance of £3,033.56 if applicable), and will be based at any UK Hub - London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, and Scotland, with flexible hybrid working. There is also additional compensation as part of the on-call rota, at 10% of base salary.

BTP is the national police force for the rail network across Great Britain, including the London Underground, across which they ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys annually and over 100 million tons of freight. The External Affairs Advisor will provide direct support to the External Affairs Lead to enhance engagement with the rail industry, central Government, wider political arena, and other key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading on the implementation of the Force’s Stakeholder Engagement Plan ensuring that it is regularly reviewed, developed, and updated.
  • Maintaining an accurate and timely database management system of stakeholder interactions, producing a regular summary report of engagement and outcomes trends.
  • Producing clear and concise briefings, responses to reports, correspondence, presentations and responds to requests for information for senior officers, including the Chief Officer group.
  • Continually identifying lessons learned in stakeholder engagement for the Force and implement any critical actions/improvements.
  • Managing the response to Parliamentary Questions and submissions to select committees.
  • Undertaking horizon scanning across the industry to identify opportunities and risks and monitor local industry and/or political nuances and landscape.
  • Participating in the 24/7 on-call rota, the external affairs advisor needs to be able to confidently respond to incidents and enquiries out of hours.

Attitudes, Values, and Skills Required

  • Previous experience working in external affairs, with a demonstrable passion for communications and track record of being creative and imaginative in finding new ways to engage audiences.
  • Ideally, previous experience working in the public sector or coming from a transport or policing background.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work, deliver to tight deadlines, respond to changing situations and use personal initiative.
  • Proven influencing, engagement and stakeholder management skills.
  • Flexibility to deal with ambiguity and a fast-moving environment.
  • Intermediate level Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel
  • The ability to identify risks to the force – such as trending social media content – and ensure it is being handled and raised with the appropriate people.
  • The confidence and gravitas to offer advice to senior management and other members of the Force and Authority – including the ability to challenge decisions when in the force’s best interests.
  • The ability to act, particularly out of hours, without having to seek advice each time, on breaking incidents and incoming media queries.
