CAF seek to hire Head of External Affairs to work closely with the CEO

The Charities Aid Foundation is at a key moment in their century-long history. An international charity, based in the UK, in the past year more than £1 billion in philanthropic funds have been entrusted into their stewardship for the first time – an increase of more than £300 million on the previous year. CAF are one of the UK’s largest charitable foundations and they are looking to increase their voice to reflect the wishes of the many people who choose the Charities Aid Foundation to help them fulfil their charitable goals and the charities that rely on that support.

With their donors’ trust comes the responsibility to ensure that CAF's aims are reflected in their external affairs work. That is where the Head of External Affairs comes in. The opportunity
Ellwood Atfield is delighted to be working with CAF to hire a Head of External Affairs. This is a senior role as part of CAF’s leadership team providing strategic direction for CAF’s external affairs agenda to support CAF’s ambitions to enhance both our influence and impact in the UK and Internationally. Acting as a senior adviser to internal stakeholders, the Head of External Affairs will provide leadership for an integrated and aligned media/social media, policy, public affairs and research programme to support CAF’s long term objectives.

Main responsibilities

  • Strategic public affairs and policy leadership and outreach in support of CAF’s mandate to grow charitable giving, while overseeing the charity’s external communications strategy.
  • Execute and enhance an overarching, cohesive thought leadership strategy across the Group, maximising expertise, research outputs and policy development.
  • Oversee detailed, focused policy requests of UK Government to advance International and domestic UK strategies.
  • Deliver a proactive, comprehensive communications strategy to raise CAF’s cross-border giving specialism and ability to enable businesses and individuals to donate effectively and efficiently across all audiences by elevating CAF’s presence in the media.
  • Position CAF’s senior leadership as subject matter experts and leading voices in philanthropic giving in all its forms, the needs of charities, and cross-border giving in both public affairs and communications streams.

Key skills and experience required

  • Demonstrable experience of leading in a similar function in an organisation with a complex stakeholder environment.
  • Previous experience in frontline, proactive public affairs, execution of strategic engagement with public policy makers to enable and drive strategic objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of building and maintaining successful working relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Government, policy makers, industry colleagues and the media. 
  • A solid grasp of the role of strategic communications as an important management tool together with applied knowledge of the various disciplines which make up the external affairs function.
  • Significant experience of leading, managing and delivering multi-disciplinary public affairs and communications strategies in a medium or large organisation, preferably in a corporate trade association, charity, or government environment.
