The opportunity & organisation
Ellwood Atfield is partnered with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to appoint a Head of External Affairs.

ISI is an independent inspectorate, appointed by the Department for Education to inspect association independent schools in England and British schools overseas. It is also appointed by the Home Office to inspect private further education colleges and language schools in England and Wales.

The candidate
We are seeking an experienced integrated communications and engagement specialist, with excellent judgement and collaboration skills to join the ISI’s small and dynamic team. The successful postholder will be highly adept at building relationships with stakeholders, both externally and internally, and possess exceptional communications skills.

This is an excellent opportunity for an incumbent Head of External Affairs or Communications, or a senior manager ready to step up into a leadership position, to drive forward meaningful engagement and communications for a key organisation in the schools and education space. Applicants do not need to be from the education sector, and could come from a not-for-profit or corporate, agency or in-house environment.

Key responsibilities
An overview of the core responsibilities for this post are below:

  • Develop and execute an external affairs strategy aligned with ISI’s goals.
  • Advise the Chief Inspector-CEO on stakeholder engagement and reputation management.
  • Manage media relations at a national and sector level.
  • Assist senior leaders in preparing for speaking engagements and oversee stakeholder events.
  • Coordinate high-quality communications to various stakeholders.
  • Direct ISI’s digital communication strategy and maintain website usability.
  • Utilise monitoring systems to inform decision making and navigate sector changes.
  • Lead stakeholder consultations and manage corporate publications.
  • Coordinate ISI’s Education Advisory Forum and attend stakeholder meetings.
  • Establish and maintain brand strategy and guidelines.
  • Manage a Communications Officer.
