Exciting Policy Lead opportunity within the further education sector

The organisation
Ellwood Atfield is partnered with a membership body which represents the interests of the UK further education sector. The organisation is looking for a Policy Lead to their high-performance team.

The organisation represents the collective voice of the UK’s universities and leading businesses. It’s purpose is to unite policy makers, universities and business; promote the skills and talent developed by universities and optimise opportunities for the UK’s research and development projects.

About the role
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping, positioning; driving policy and engagement activities with members and funders across all aspects of the organisation's R&I portfolio. This ranges from analysis of the incentives for the private sector to innovate, to public funding for research and development and attracting and attracting international investment into the UK’s research system.  

Key responsibilities

  • Identify, set, and deliver R&I policy priorities through engagement with members, funders, and key stakeholders.
  • Design and manage the delivery of R&I projects, including a major 2024 project on industrial policy prioritisation.
  • Write and prepare submissions for external consultations on research and innovation.
  • Commission and manage policy analysis on R&I by external consultants.
  • Promote research and innovation outputs through various communication channels, including presentations, press releases, blogs, and social media.
  • Develop and maintain relations with external stakeholders, representing the organisation in policy meetings, and providing feedback to enhance organizational impact.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, managing tasks within projects, and contributing positively to the organization's culture.

Essential skills/experience

  • Degree or equivalent education.
  • Experience in policy development and implementation in research and innovation.
  • Strong analytical skills for identifying priorities, leading policy thinking, and developing recommendations using qualitative and quantitative evidence.
  • Strong organizational and project management experience across diverse policy areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, producing high-quality outputs and conveying complex issues accessibly.
  • Ability to develop influential networks and effective partnerships with external stakeholders.
