Ellwood Atfield is partnered HC-One, Britain’s largest care home provider encompassing dementia care, nursing, residential and specialist care, with almost 300 care homes across England, Scotland and Wales.

We are working with HC-One to appoint a PR & Press Office Manager offering a salary of £45,000 (with up to 5% bonus) and is primarily remote/home based with travel to Darlington and London on a regular basis, plus travel to HC-One’s homes nationwide.

The PR & Press Office Manager will drive forward the HC-One media relations agenda to promote their interests, advance their reputation, and inform and influence the future of the sector.

Main Activities

  • Support the Head of External Affairs in the delivery of a proactive and reactive PR and media strategy to enhance the company's reputation, and position HC-One as a thought leader in the sector.
  • Support the Head of External Affairs to deliver plans from this strategy that involve proactive and reactive media relations seeking high level placements in print, broadcast and online media, identifying themes, data, insight and case studies that support those plans and overarching strategy.
  • Manage HC-One’s Press Office function and activity, and  the work plans of the Press Officer and Junior Press Officer. This will include:
  1. Lead on national media engagement.
  2. Lead officers in local and regional media engagement.
  3. Cultivate and maintain strong media relationships, representing the company confidently.
  4. Lead reactive media relations, including reputational and issues management.
  5. Review media daily to identify key announcements, opportunities, and risks, targeting relevant journalists.
  6. Coordinate media pitch 'sell-in' and manage media inquiries.
  7. Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota, providing cover as needed.
  8. Monitor and report media coverage about HC-One.
  9. Manage media databases, track engagement, and flag patterns, risks, and opportunities.
  • Continually develop HC-One's messaging on key business and sector issues, relevant to the three nations in which HC-One operates and embed the use of these across the organisation.
  • Lead on creating engaging and impactful press releases, media kits, and other PR materials (including social media content) to effectively communicate the company's key messages, working with the Press Officer and Junior Press Officer. 
  • Lead on managing and updating the External Affairs annual calendar from a PR perspective, ensuring forward planning of events and activity of at least 3 - 6 months (wherever possible), ensuring alignment with teams internally (particularly Internal Communications and Marketing).
  • Successfully line manage 2 FTEs, including supporting with their development, leading on Growth Conversations and arranging and attending regular 1:1s, and updating the Head of External Affairs accordingly.
