The Electoral Commission seeks a Senior Press Officer

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. It works to promote public confidence in the democratic process and to ensure its integrity. A modern regulator, operating within a unique and changing political context, the Commission has a broad and challenging remit, with a growing profile for this range of activity.

The opportunity 
The role of Senior Press Officer is a vital role within the communications directorate. You will be helping to deliver a busy and exciting press office function and be at the forefront of developing and implementing PR and communications campaigns which advocate for changes to our democracy. You will work in a small team and take the lead on a variety of media projects. A successful Senior Press Officer will work well under pressure, especially when dealing with high volume reactive media enquiries whist keeping an enthusiastic and proactive approach.

Main responsibilities
•    Work with the wider external affairs team to protect and enhance the Commission’s reputation 
•    Help to deliver the Commission’s media engagement strategy 
•    Draft corporate publications, press releases and comment pieces to a high standard
•    Assist on developing and delivering communication campaigns that successfully make the case for the modernisation and improvement of our political and electoral systems
•    Build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, and prepare senior staff for media interviews
•    Develop and maintain the social media strategy across a variety of platforms

Key experience and skills required
•    Experience of a busy press office
•    Experience of communicating complex and often technical information and policies
•    Experience of navigating a complex stakeholder map
•    Proven track record of building beneficial relationships with the media
•    Be politically astute and have an interest in current affairs
•    Have the gravitas to brief senior management when required
