The Opportunity

The opportunity:

Ellwood Atfield is partnering with Ofgem, Great Britain's energy regulator, to appoint a Deputy Director: Employee Engagement and Change Communications on an initial 24-month fixed-term contract, to lead the strategy and delivery of employee engagement and change communications across the organisation.

Ofgem is navigating major change as the energy system transforms and the Ofgem Review reshapes its duties and remit. This is a rare opportunity for a senior communications leader to help 2,000+ colleagues understand and engage with that evolution, through executive storytelling, cross-organisational campaigns and building clarity, trust and accountability at scale.

Main responsibilities:

  • Lead and deliver Ofgem's employee engagement and change communications strategy, driving understanding, engagement and adoption of change
  • Build relationships and influence across leadership teams to win support for large-scale organisational change
  • Lead and mentor an internal communications team, matrix-managing change professionals across the business
  • Drive innovation in the use of technology and AI across internal communications channels, translating this into execution and delivery
  • Develop executive messaging and organisational storytelling, manage issues responsively, and measure communications effectiveness
  • Uphold governance, transparency and ethical standards across all communications activity.

Essential Skills and Experience Required:

  • Proven experience leading change, transformation and internal communications at scale, including advising senior executives in complex or matrixed organisations
  • A track record of leading high-performing internal communications teams and matrix-managing change professionals
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills, comfortable navigating challenge and difficult conversations with senior leaders
  • A demonstrable record of delivering and evaluating internal communications campaigns with measurable impact, backed by strong strategic, analytical and programme management skills
  • Experience of data-led impact and AI in a change or internal engagement context is desirable.
