The opportunity:
IEMA is looking to appoint a Director of Policy and Public Affairs to provide leadership and oversight of IEMA’s policy and engagement work with members and wider stakeholders.
As a Director on the Senior Leadership Team, the role holder will become a leading voice in the sustainability profession, lead the development of policy strategy, empathetically manage the Policy team of 5, and drive cross-functional collaboration to ensure policy initiatives are effectively integrated across the organisation.
As a Senior Director in the business the role holder will also play a key role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction, providing leadership and insight to drive performance, foster innovation, and ensure alignment with the organisation’s mission and values.
Main responsibilities include:
- Lead and set the direction for IEMA’s policy team and engagement programmes with members and link them to external policy-making processes to create high-profile, positive impact with strong narratives and clear positions for members.
- Horizon-scanning to identify developments or trends that have the potential to shape the future of the profession.
- Lead IEMA’s policy and engagement work, ensuring it informs and supports IEMA’s professional standards, CPD, training, corporate partnership, marketing, and communications programmes.
- Work with the Deputy CEO, and also the Relationships and Networking Manager to deliver a range of impactful networking opportunities for senior professionals.
- Lead IEMA’s parliamentary affairs work and engagement with external stakeholders, with a focus on positioning IEMA and the profession as central to putting sustainability at the heart of the economy.
- Lead collaborative relationships with multiple international stakeholders including industry bodies to pool resources and expertise.
Key skills and experience required:
- Demonstrable experience of developing policy positions in an environmental and sustainability role.
- Significant experience of leading complex, multi-stakeholder programmes and/or projects.
- Substantial experience of environmental or broader sustainability issues, someone who is able to provide thought leadership and insights to senior policy makers, professionals and decisionmakers.
- Experience of leading, developing and inspiring a high performing team .
- Ability to work cross functionally and routinely share strategies and insights and be able to provide leadership input on companywide projects and initiatives.
- Ideally have experience of working in a membership organisation or professional body, with members and understanding their priorities.

Direct reports: 4 x Policy and Engagement Leads and 1 x Public Affairs Officer
