The Opportunity

The opportunity:

Ellwood Atfield are partnering with a professional body and membership organisation within the healthcare sector to recruit a Media Relations Officer. You will play a key role in shaping public perception and raising awareness of the essential work done by healthcare professionals across the UK. You’ll have the chance to make a real impact in a values-driven organisation that supports its people and champions excellence in care.

Main responsibilities:

  • Draft, refine, and circulate press releases, media statements, and briefing materials for senior spokespeople.
  • Respond to media enquiries efficiently and accurately, often working to tight deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, editors and media organisations across print, broadcast, and online channels.
  • Engage with the media to clearly communicate the organisation's position, and to challenge misleading information before it is published.
  • Actively pitch stories to the media to gain coverage for key campaigns, initiatives, and events.
  • Track media coverage and deliver regular updates and reports to senior leaders, sharing relevant content promptly with internal teams.
  • Contribute to an on-call rota to provide media support outside of regular working hours.
  • Collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team environment.

Key skills and experience required:

  • Proven track record of working in a fast-paced media and communications team.
  • Demonstrated ability to build media relationships and secure coverage in both regional and national outlets.
  • Able to identify newsworthy opportunities, respond to media enquiries, and mitigate reputational risks.
  • Strong capability in writing accurate and engaging content for digital platforms using SEO.
  • Experience in providing media briefings on complex, sensitive, or high-profile topics.
  • Knowledge of managing social media channels.
  • Experience of working in the health sector, for a trade union or membership body is desirable but not essential.
