The Opportunity

About Energy UK

Energy UK is the trade association for the energy industry, representing companies investing billions of pounds to secure our country’s current and future energy needs. From growing start-ups to major electricity generators, grid and infrastructure developers and energy suppliers, our members are driving change across power, heat, transport and flexibility.

They provide a collective voice for the sector working with governments, regulators, charities and other organisations to provide crucial insight that shapes policy, offers solutions and promotes best practice.

The Opportunity

Energy UK is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic media relations professional and communications all-rounder to help them deliver high quality media coverage for their organisation, and its membership and support the energy sector’s reputation.

In a sector under increasing public and political focus, this newly created role is key in supporting the energy industry’s reputation as it contributes to the UK’s climate goals. The successful candidate will handle media enquiries, act as a spokesperson, draft press materials, and prepare staff for media appearances.

While primarily media-facing, the role also involves broader communications work across social media, campaigns, public affairs, and events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day press team operations, handling media enquiries and maintaining strong relationships with national, regional, trade, and broadcast journalists
  • Draft and issue press releases, statements, and opinion pieces, while generating and pitching proactive story ideas to enhance media coverage
  • Coordinate and prepare colleagues for media appearances, including arranging interviews and providing strategic communications advice
  • Contribute to publications, reports, and newsletters; support internal processes, record-keeping, and collaborate with external partners and the wider communications team, including participation in the out-of-hours media rota

Personal Specification

  • Proven media experience in a press office or fast-paced news environment, with a strong track record of building effective relationships with journalists and understanding media needs
  • Exceptional communication skills, including excellent copywriting, proofreading, and the ability to tailor messages for a variety of audiences and channels
  • Confident handling complex topics, with the ability and willingness to quickly grasp industry issues and communicate them clearly across multiple platforms
  • Well-rounded understanding of the landscape, including awareness of the media and political environment, Energy UK’s role, and (ideally) the energy sector and climate change issues
  • Strong personal attributes such as being a team player, organised, self-motivated, resilient under pressure, and genuinely interested in the energy sector and media

 Recruitment Process

Energy UK are seeking to create a diverse work culture that is truly representative of society, embracing different perspectives and attracting the best, most creative talent to our team. They value transferable skills and encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply, even if they don’t meet all the criteria. They are proud to work in an inclusive, friendly, and supportive environment, and if you have additional needs, both Energy UK and Ellwood Atfield would be very happy to speak about any support we could offer, during the recruitment process.
