The Opportunity

The organisation:

Ellwood Atfield has partnered with Alzheimer’s Research UK to recruit for a Public Affairs Manager to join the team. As the UK’s leading dementia research charity, they work to revolutionise the way dementia is treated, diagnosed, and prevented, working towards a cure.

The opportunity:

The Public Affairs Manager will develop and lead the charity’s public affairs work, reporting to the Senior Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager. As part of their policy and public affairs team, you will work closely with colleagues across the organisation to drive influence and impact with policymakers in government, parliament, and the wider political arena to make a difference for people affected by dementia and their families. You will play a key role in a creative and dynamic team, taking initiative to work on projects and initiatives that maximise ARUK’s impact with key decision-makers. This role may include work in London and elsewhere in the UK.

Main responsibilities:

  • Supervising a programme of parliamentary engagement, ensuring the charity has a meaningful role in shaping future legislation on dementia, healthcare, and scientific research
  • Leading responses and briefings on key legislation and guidance, including proposing draft amendments where appropriate
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders including Ministers, SPADs, and civil servants
  • Co-ordinating parliamentary briefs, developing submissions for parliamentary questions, select committees, and other opportunities
  • Working with campaigns, communications, and brand colleagues to build their reach and engagement with key audiences
  • Ensuring the public affairs work reflects the needs and aspirations of people living with dementia, involving supporters in their political influencing work
  • Representing ARUK at parliamentary and other events and conferences
  • Identifying opportunities to partner with other organisations to maximise impact
  • Oversee the work of two Public Affairs Officers and contribute to their learning and development

Experience required:

  • Previous experience and proven ability in a public affairs role, ideally for a Health charity or other similar organisation
  • Previous experience in line management
  • Strong knowledge of parliamentary procedure and the wider political environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, and advising on strategies to influence them
  • Ideally, knowledge of dementia and working with supporters/people with lived experience of an issue to maximise the impact of public affairs work

  • Salary: £45,000
  • Hybrid working – 2 days in the office, 3 days from home
