EU Competition Law for Associations : focus on lobby alliances and other coalitions
Frédéric Louis will build on last year’s session on competition law and respond directly to demand from Academy members with this month’s topic.
Most associations and other complex organisations have offices in Brussels in order to seek favourable policy outcomes for their respective business sectors. The trend with the Juncker Commission has been however to reduce the frequency of policy and regulatory output. This slower pace combined with the growing number of Member States and other stakeholders from the private sector or civil society has led to an increasing number of lobby coalitions or alliances.
Yet, how do you structure the governance of such a loose arrangement and how do you avoid the pitfalls and deal with the competition law issues that arise from it? These challenges arise also when co or self regulation is sought.

Frédéric Louis focuses on all aspects o
f EU competition law, in particular, behavioural investigations (cartels and abuse of dominance), merger clearances and State Aid. In addition, he has extensive litigation experience, having represented clients in more than 35 proceedings before the European courts in Luxembourg. Mr. Louis has been centrally involved in pioneering transparency litigation, having won a series of cases mandating freedom of access to information held by the EU institutions. He also litigates and represents clients before Dutch and Belgian courts (including antitrust damages claims) and competition authorities. Frédéric’s client focus is on complex organisations, associations and alliances.
