Nailing employee engagement

Event: The Employee Engagement Best Practice Showcase featuring TATA Consulting Services, Herbalife, TfL, News UK, PwC

This was a fantastic event that kicked off with TATA Consulting Services who won Company of the Year 2016 at the Employee Engagement Awards. Anshoo Kapoor discussed their fantastic employee engagement programme, which includes Bring your Child To Work; their Community Engagement; and their aim to be as supportive as possible and make it a fantastic place to work where people can be their best. She also touched on their Generation Y workforce, who are an average age of 25, and that this group of employees like to experiment at work. All this has resulted in engagement scores of 87% which is the lowest in the industry.

We also saw the new employee app P&MM have developed for One Stop (a subsidiary of Tesco) which includes push notifications, information about pay, benefits and other useful information for employees who don’t have access to a computer.

Julian Cachioli from Herbalife discussed the importance of wellbeing programmes being part of engagement initiatives. Jim Abbatt talked about the TfL programme and again discussed the importance of listening to employees and spending a day in their shoes. Ruth Dance from News UK also talked about the importance of this and of not giving up – success takes time. She said:

Whatever leaders spend their time on, the organisation is likely to mimic” and to, “Put the consumers’ voice at the top of the agenda.” Very wise words…

There was also a panel debate featuring my former colleague Victoria Lewis-Stephens who is Managing Partner of Engagement at Instinctif; Caroline Fleming from PWC; Saurav Chopra from Perkbox and Fiona Sweeting from Northern Gas Networks. One of the best takeaways from the debate, in order to get Board support, is to find out what keeps them awake at night and how you can help them solve this through employee engagement.

Sports Psychologist Dr. Chris Shambrook gave everyone some wise words about people having the ‘will and the ‘skill’ to get things done. And there was a great session from Tim Pointer, Pentland Brands who were highly commended in the Enterprise and company of the Year, 2015, who discussed the fact that cultures are changing – the influx of Gen Y being one of the reasons for this – and you need to be able to connect with people and give them what they need.

Thank you to all who organised including James Murphy who introduced everyone and Crispin Manners of the Employee Engagement Alliance.
