The Organisation
The News Media Association (NMA) is the voice of national, regional and local news media organisations in the UK – a £4 billion sector read by 46.4 million adults every month in print and online. The NMA promotes the interests of news media publishers to government, regulators and other bodies whose work affects the industry.
The Opportunity
The Chief Executive will lead the effective running of the NMA and a proactive government affairs programme on behalf of the news publishing industry, coordinating industry responses to political, regulatory, commercial and legal threats in the UK, Europe and beyond.
Main Responsibilities
- Strategic leadership and day-to-day running of the NMA to represent members to Government, Parliament and regulators.
- Acting as the industry’s representative on relevant UK and international bodies.
- Leading the discussion, formation and communication of key policy objectives; fostering consensus across a diverse membership.
- Managing a small multi-skilled team delivering the NMA’s work programme and specialist services to publisher members.
- Liaising with relevant international bodies on areas of common interest (including News Media Europe, WAN-IFRA, IPI, and the FCO initiative on global media freedom and journalist safety).
Skills and experience
- An exceptional track record in government relations and public affairs, with a deep commitment to editorial and commercial media freedoms.
- Senior leadership experience with evidence of strong organisational and financial stewardship.
- Strong experience using media and PR to raise awareness and build support for industry priorities.
- A dynamic and articulate spokesperson with a proven ability to campaign, energise and galvanise support for key issues.
- Confidence with senior Ministers, civil servants and regulators, and a style that can build consensus across member interests.
- Commercial and marketing experience, and an understanding of the commercial issues facing the industry.
