The opportunity:

The role of Faculty Communications Manager (Humanities and Social Sciences) sits within the central Communications team and serves as the primary communications lead for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

As one of three Faculty Communications Managers—each aligned with one of the University’s faculties—this role is responsible for developing and delivering strategic internal and external communications for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Working closely with Faculty leadership, academic and professional services staff, the postholder supports the University’s broader goals of increasing awareness and reputation, driving student recruitment, and enhancing engagement among staff and students.

The Faculty Communications Manager (Humanities and Social Sciences) is the lead contact for communications across the Faculty and works in close partnership with the Faculty Marketing Manager to be a point of contact to the central marketing and communications services. The role is supported by the central Communications team and directly line manages a team of two communications officers.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver integrated internal and external communications strategies for the Faculty, supporting reputation, engagement (internal and external) and student recruitment objectives.
  • Act as the principal communications adviser to Faculty leadership teams, providing expert guidance on media relations, campaigns, stakeholder communications and reputation management.
  • Develop high-quality content across multiple channels, including press releases, digital platforms, social media, newsletters and leadership communications, ensuring consistency of brand and messaging.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on communications activity and campaign performance, using insight and analytics to inform future strategy and continuous improvement.

 

Key Skills and Experience required:

  • Significant experience of developing and implementing successful communications activities and campaigns (including media relations activities).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience translating complex subject matter into engaging and accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Proven experience of coordinating integrated communications across traditional and digital platforms to meet marketing and communications goals.
  • Comfortable working alongside senior leadership teams and or Boards/Committees.
  • Experience of working in within higher education or a complex organisation.
  • Experience of matrix managing and directly line managing others
  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Salary banding: £54,617 – £60,901, dependent on experience*

  • 30 days holiday plus bank holidays

 

*Please note that Queen Mary advertise salaries on a range to indicate the trajectory of progression that can be made. Appointments are usually made at the start of the salary range. The Queen Mary salary structure includes automatic pay progression within the published grades, subject to service, funding and performance. In addition to this, there are performance related annual pay review schemes in place.
