The Opportunity

The organisation

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation is an international human rights organisation who have offices based in London and the US. The Foundation was founded in 2022 to fight for Hong Kong and its people, as China continues its crackdown on the city. The CHFK Foundation raises awareness of the issues faced by people who flee Hong Kong and China, such as transnational repression, and exposes how China behaves in many countries across the world through economic coercion, interference in politics, academics, and through local authorities.

The opportunity:

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation is seeking an experienced and driven individual to take on the role of Head of UK Public Affairs and Advocacy. This is a pivotal position within an international organisation which represents an incredible opportunity to launch or elevate a career in international advocacy.

The successful applicant will lead the Foundation’s UK political engagement strategy, building and maintaining high-level relationships with Members of Parliament, peers, ministers, civil servants, and political advisors. They will play a central role in shaping the UK’s response to the repression of freedoms in Hong Kong and advancing the Foundation’s broader mission to defend democracy, press freedom, and the rights of political prisoners.

This role is ideal for a self-starter who thrives in fast-paced political environments and is passionate about creating meaningful change. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering integrated advocacy campaigns that align political activity with media and public engagement. They will be expected to act with autonomy and initiative, while also manage and collaborate with a small team.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent political judgement, strong strategic thinking, and the confidence to represent the organisation at the highest levels. They will demonstrate a strong understanding of UK parliamentary and government processes, as well as the ability to influence decision-makers across party lines. Above all, they will be motivated by a commitment to human rights.

Experience required

  • Significant experience in front-line advocacy and public affairs roles
  • Strong understanding of the UK political landscape, including Westminster and Whitehall operations
  • Proven track record of working with politicians, advisors, and civil servants to achieve defined goals
  • Experience in political engagement and identifying opportunities for impactful change
  • Demonstrated ability in line management and team leadership
  • Experience campaigning on international causes such as human rights, political prisoners, and sanctions
  • Expertise in working with APPGs and Select Committees
  • Experience working with or for international NGOs and global advocacy organisations
  • Familiarity with China, Hong Kong, and related issues impacting the UK's relationship is desirable but not essential
  • Significant experience of how to work effectively with media to raise awareness of campaigns
