The Royal College of Surgeons of England is entering an exciting new phase in its policy and influencing work, with the organisation evolving its Policy and Campaigns function to deliver greater external impact across the issues affecting surgeons and patients.

Representing over 30,000 surgeons and dental surgeons worldwide, the College plays a leading role in shaping standards in surgical care, supporting the profession and influencing debate across major healthcare and workforce challenges.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in health policy and influencing while helping shape the future direction of surgical policy and influencing work at one of the UK’s most respected professional bodies. 

As Policy Officer, you will support the development and delivery of policy activity across a wide range of issues affecting surgical practice, workforce and healthcare delivery. Working closely with clinicians and colleagues across policy, campaigns, publications, and communications, you will monitor and analyse political, NHS and regulatory developments, identify emerging trends and support the development of accessible policy insights and member communications.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative and ambitious team environment with the opportunity to help shape the development of surgical policy, campaigns and member engagement work at one of the UK’s leading professional membership organisations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor political, NHS and regulatory developments relevant to surgery and dental surgery, identifying emerging issues and opportunities.
  • Produce high-quality concise policy updates, briefings and analysis for colleagues, members and stakeholders.
  • Support the development of consultation responses, policy papers and evidence-based recommendations.
  • Undertake research and horizon scanning across healthcare policy, workforce, training and patient safety issues.
  • Draft clear, accessible communications to members, explaining policy developments and their impact.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across campaigns, communications and engagement to support wider influencing objectives.

Person Specification

  • Experience monitoring policy or political developments and summarising key implications.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesise information from multiple sources.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including producing clear briefings and policy updates.
  • Understanding of UK policy processes in healthcare or regulatory environments.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively at pace.
