Ellwood Atfield is proud to be partnering with Drinkaware,the leading alcohol charity. Drinkaware uses its expertise to give governments, industry, communities and individuals the knowledge and support to make informed decisions about alcohol and how to reduce the harm that excessive consumption can cause.
The Trust is funded primarily through voluntary, unrestricted donations from alcohol producers, wholesalers and on-and-off-trade retailers but acts entirely independently.
The Opportunity
Drinkaware is looking for a Senior Media and Communications Officer to support the delivery of the charity’s communications strategy while ensuring the organisation remains a respected and well-recognised voice in the sector.
This is a varied role leading on reactive press and media activity, ensuring Drinkaware’s key messages and positions are clearly communicated to relevant stakeholders. You will also oversee the charity’s internal communications function, creating compelling content to keep staff informed and engaged.
The role will involve promoting the charity’s projects and key achievements while spotlighting the impact of Drinkaware’s work.
Responsibilities
- Manage Drinkaware’s reactive media and communications activity, ensuring key messages and priorities are communicated effectively.
- Oversee Drinkaware’s internal communications function to keep staff informed and engaged.
- Work with colleagues across the organisation to highlight Drinkaware’s impact, projects and upcoming events.
- Create engaging content for Drinkaware’s external stakeholders, communicating the charity’s key messages and positions.
- Manage Drinkaware’s press office, responding to media enquiries and drafting comments and statements.
- Build strong relationships with journalists while identifying opportunities to provide comment on relevant news topics.
- Utilise the charity’s monitoring platforms to produce reports that inform the broader communications strategy.
- Protect Drinkaware’s reputation by identifying potential risks and supporting the de-escalation of crises.
- Collaborate with the research team to promote the charity’s key findings and highlight the impact of its work.
- Ensure media and strategic communications activity is consistent with broader content creation.
Person Specification
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to transform complex information into accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven experience leading internal communications activities.
- Ability to respond to emerging media developments while identifying opportunities for meaningful media coverage.
- Skilled at creating and delivering impactful communications projects from inception through to completion.
- Experience in the health or consumer wellbeing sector (desirable).
