Exciting Policy and Public Affairs Manager opportunity at a national health charity

The organisation

Ellwood Atfield is working exclusively with the National Kidney Federation (NKF) who are looking for a Policy and Public Affairs Manager. The National Kidney Federation is an independent charity which represent the 3.5 million people in the UK living with kidney disease. The organisation actively campaigns for improvements in renal care and treatment, whilst providing a range of patient support services across the UK. 

The opportunity

This is a  newly created role within a growing organisation. As a Policy and Public Affairs Manager, you will play a big role in enhancing national awareness of kidney disease in the UK. You will work closely with the CEO and other senior staff to ensure the charity plays a key role in addressing challenges associated with renal care and treatment. You will boost the profile and effectiveness of the NKF's policy and public affairs programmes, building on current policy activities whilst partnering with the organisation's 50 Kidney Patient Association members. You will have the opportunity to determine the charity's policy strategy and lead in its implementation. 

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the NKF's policy and public affairs activities, working closely with the charity's CEO and Head of Marketing and Fundraising.
  • To develop and maintain strong professional ties between NKF members and the policy making community, whilst enhancing the organisation's influence within the NHS, government and Parliament.
  • To keep up to date of current political developments, and consultations pertaining to kidney disease in the UK.
  • To communicate the organisation's policy positions through the preparation of written submissions and responses to Whitehall, devolved governments and Parliament.
  • To create policy position papers, briefings and statements whilst creating a strong evidence base to inform policy positions.
  • To plan and enact advocacy campaigns aimed at raising public awareness of kidney disease in the UK.
  • To bolster relationship building with policy leads in other key organisations relating to kidney disease, including the NHS and other renal organisations.

Key Skills and Experience Required 

  • Proven record of working successfully within a charity policy team.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in both written and verbal settings with a range of audiences including policymakers, social scientists, and the general public.
  • A demonstrable record of fostering effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and a good understanding of NHS structures.
  • A strong commitment to the prevention of kidney disease in society.
  • A self-starter able to balance competing priorities, suggest new ideas and complete tasks according to time and budget constraints.
  • Ability to analyse information critically, identify gaps in knowledge and present evidence to advance policy positions.
  • Willingness to support the charity in its social media channels and producing press releases.
